Meet Cedric Patterson

Cedric Patterson is a Fire Chief, executive advisor, Marine Veteran, and national fire service leader with three decades of experience leading complex emergency service organizations. Throughout his career, he has served in positions from probationary firefighter to Fire Chief while helping agencies strengthen organizational performance through strategic planning, leadership development, workforce initiatives, accreditation, labor relations, and operational analysis.

His work extends beyond managing emergency response. Patterson has led enterprise labor negotiations, developed executive decision-support systems, coordinated large-scale special events involving multiple public safety agencies, and created organizational frameworks that help leaders make informed, data-driven decisions. His experience spans municipal and Department of Defense fire departments, where operational readiness and mission continuity demand disciplined leadership and strategic execution.

Nationally, Patterson serves on the International Association of Fire Chiefs Terrorism and Homeland Security Committee, mentors aspiring fire chiefs through the Center for Public Safety Excellence, and has been selected as the Class Mentor for the Department of Defense Fire Officer IV Program. He is the only Department of Defense Chief Officer to complete the International Association of Fire Chiefs Fire Service Executive Development Institute (FSEDI), and his professional education includes the Harvard Kennedy School Public Leadership Credential, Air Command and Staff College, an MBA in Strategic Management, and executive leadership programs focused on public sector management.

His leadership has been recognized with Navy Fire Chief of the Year, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Civilian Fire Officer of the Year, AETC Civilian Fire Officer of the Year, Navy Large Fire Department of the Year, and multiple Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Large Fire Department of the Year awards. He has authored professional publications, presented nationally on leadership and organizational strategy, and continues to advise fire service leaders on building stronger organizations through practical experience and strategic thinking.
